This Helicopter Just Flew On Mars!

साल पहले

The Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity aims to make the first powered flight on another planet when it takes off on Mars. It has now landed and safely checked in with the rover. It should detach and fly within the first 30-60 days of the mission. I learned a lot getting to visit the drone right before it was mounted on the rover at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
How do you fly in 1% of Earth's atmosphere:
Have large rotors (they are 1.2m in diameter) and spin them very fast, around 2500 RPM (5x the speed of a helicopter on Earth).
Plus the aircraft has to be light:
The Mars helicopter weighs in at 1.8kg or around the same as a laptop. Every piece had to be stripped down for weight. Instead of using aerogel for insulation, the craft makes use of CO2 gaps between components. Even aerogel was too heavy!
One of the major challenges is surviving the Martian night:
Temperatures plunge to -80C to -100C so two thirds of the craft's power is actually used to keep its electronics warm. Only one third is used for flying. The estimated flight time is 90 seconds.
The craft can't be driven remotely, it will have to fly autonomously, using its own sensor suite to determine how to fly. The round trip 20 minute delay with Earth means steering the craft from mission control would be impossible.

No WAY! I can't even get cell service on this planet! Besides a $3.5 Billion Dollar drone? And for what? Someone's hobby? What a gross waste of tax payers money.

Got to admit the drone motor and blades aren't all that special. The race drones i fly use plastic props and the motors spin around 40,000 RPM sooo why go so expensive for the props and with drones 2,500 RPM isnt fast at all. Even R/C helicopters that use plastic props and have collective pitch spin around 8,000 RPM.

Through this use with a thinner gas envelope, a few more laypeople can finally imagine why a kind of similar helicopter device can easily cope with the 10,000 m mark with work tasks. Greetings Peter Türr

Hello Mr. Ask how many grams or milli grams the individual flukes were weighed in zone intervals. Before balancing. This means that the excess lever rocker was weighed with very fine scales at precisely defined intervals. Of course always on the side that rests downwards. And thus the individual zones are absolutely identical. All of them. Only in this way can the actual balancing be carried out afterwards. The experts know exactly what I mean by that. It is about any later vibrations that can then no longer be corrected. In order to avoid that the device dismantles itself due to interference during this long period of use. So the tilting weighing is the basis for a long service life. Greetings Peter Türr

Sneaky title change
All this worry about HEAT/COLD. All you need is a Peltier or A small electric inexpensive coil heater. They have been worried about these COLD temps for 40 plus years. Stop thinking so much and get some off the shelf heating devices and tweak them. Hire 20 High School geeks and throw then $40 an hour and give big bonuses for least weeks, days etc. A LOT CHEAPER than a lot of useless $300K "scientists". Or even better is make these Rovers powered by nuclear heat. Get no more than 3-4 grams of plutonium and scale down the size and mass, SOLVED! Now rover can go faster and make them able to rove around for DECADES!!
John Jay
John Jay 2 दिन पहले
Well then you'll be happy to know that the rover has 10 pounds of plutonium dioxide onboard providing heat and power.

It's really only a demonstrator at this stage. Sort of like a stripped down beer can as opposed to say, an Apache. It will have only a limited number of planned missions, mostly testing the autonomous navigation system. Low and slow, to answer your actual question, and not very far, either - the total flight time is 90 seconds for each hop.
